Scene 1
Scene one we see Juno from a mid-shot as she walks past a houses entrance whilst being passed by a group of runners (foreground 6-8 seconds). She is being filmed with a tracking shot until the scene is ended and transitioned into the next one (wipe) as she walks past a tree (10 seconds).

Juno picks up the milk carton at 15 seconds, followed by her drinking it at 16 seconds. The scene ends at 17 seconds as it makes a wipe transition from left to right. We then see a close up shot of two peoples shoes, one in the back (Juno's) which is walking at one at the front still. Scene five starts of with a worms eye view of a extreme long shot of a street Juno is walking along. In the background we still see Junos feet from the last scene walking across the Juno from scene five. The scene is filmed by tracking backwards whilst Juno walks towards the camera. The scene then ends at 23 seconds as it wipes bottom left to top right.
Scene 6
Scene six is a worms eye view of a lamp post which is zoomed into at the beginning. It is filmed with a steadicam to show birds in the background flying about. The scene then ends at 33 seconds with a straight cut into scene seven.
Scene 7

Scene 8
Scene eight is Juno walking along the street past a chair, guitar, box and television with a tracking shot. The shot is filmed with a level angle on Junos feet. This then transitions when the camera tilts up onto the top half of Juno still walking along the street with a slow tracking shot. Throughout this scene Juno is still carrying a milk carton. The scene then ends at 48 seconds by the camera zooming past Junos face to Junos front view of the street with a medium long shot.

Narrative
The narrative is the retelling of the story
5 narrative codes:
- Hermeneutic / enigma code:
This code refers to mystery within a text. Clues are dropped, but no clear answers are given. Enigmas within the narrative make the audience want to know more.
-Proairetic / action code:
Code contains elements of action in text.
-Semantic code:
Code refers to parts within the text that suggests or refers to additional meanings. Elements of the semantic code are called semes.
- Symbolic code:
This code is about symbolism within the text.
-Referential code
This code refers to anything in the text which refers to an external body of knowledge such as scientific, historical and cultural facts.
These are people who believe all films go a certain way or all have things in common:
Barthes:
-Code
-Action
-Symbolic
-Enigma-Mystery/Question
Levi-Straus:
Binary/Opposite
-Female+male
-Good+Evil
-Urban+Rural
Todoov:
-Obstacles
-Structure
Propp:
Characters TYPES
-Hero
-villain
-donor-helps hero
-dispatcher
-false hero
-the helper
-princes
-her father
Applying Barthes' 5 narrative codes to a film opening:
The film opening I have chosen to apply Barthes' narrative codes to is 'Now you see me':
1. Identify the key actions within the opening - what kinds of actions are included and how is the narrative moved forward?
The key actions in the opening scene of Now you see me are the magic that is involved. You can see that the key actions within this opening clip is the fact all of the magicians are making money in some kind of way, whether its actually from doing magic or stealing it. The narrative moves forward slowly throughout the opening clip as it goes from the magic going well at the beginning of the clip, to where at the end of the clip it seems the magic is done wrong and the character is in serious danger.
2. Identify the enigma codes within the opening - what kinds of questions are posed and how is the audience meant to read these codes?
There are many questions that are asked in this opening scene mainly towards the women at the end, and if she is okay, did she get eaten by the piranhas or did she survive it some how? There are also other questions which could be asked before the piranha incident to do with the magic, such as is the magic all a scam, for example when the man figures out how he is doing the magic and wants his money back, he then discovers that he is missing his wallet and watch after he caught the magician out.
3. Identify key characters and think about what they represent in the opening:
In the opening scene you can tell who the main characters are going to be straight away, they are the magicians. What they represent however is a little bit more difficult to know, they give the impression that they are magicians who use there ability to do magic, to scam people and make money.
4. Identify key themes and analyse how symbols are presented visually/technically:
Straight away in the opening scene you can see a lot of symbols, such as in the first magic trick you can see a diamond being shown on the building. There is also a few themes in the scene, such as there is a theme of misleading people through magic and making money illegally.
Representation
Today we talked about how people are represented in todays media. Also how some people show that these stereotypes aren't always true and we shouldn't believe everything we see.
Stereotypes
Is a visual shortcut which we make in our head. They are heard and made so much that we now think this is true. They are usually the way people, events and ideas are presented in the media.

Archetypes
This is the ultimate stereotype, for example the brainless blonde bimbo.

Countertype
Something that challenges the stereotypes associated with group, places and people.
Representation in a film opening:
Who/what is being represented?
In this opening scene the main character is being represented as lonely, this is shown by the way he talks to his dog when he is in the car. By doing this it represents he is on his own and is acting as if his dog is a human being he can talk to.

Semiotics
Today in media studies we learnt about semiotics:
This is the study of signs and also the study of anything which stands for 'something else.'
Denotation- what we see when we look at an image. (what it is).
The connotation of this photo is that there are three teenagers standing together and the large title which says Superbad.
The denotation of this photo is that the three boys look very intimidated or frightened. the way that Mclovin (the boy on the far left) has his arms crossed could mean he is worried. He has a very closed body language. Then the other two also look very worried, but perhaps Seth (the one in the middle) is the leader of the three since he is in the middle, he calls the shots within the group.

Genre Picture task
This photo is showing action. It shows spencer jumping toward me, this shows that perhaps I have wronged spencer and he is attacking me through anger or is trying revenge. The reason we took the photo like this is to show that spencer is higher than me, so he has the advantage.
This photo is to show love. The photo is taken through a fence so it looks like its hidden. you can also see that we are both laughing so maybe it shows they are joking or having fun. They could love each other as friends and this could be a joke they are doing.
This is a sports scene. the fact that I am looking at the floor perhaps shows that I am unconfident or nervous and spencer is looking straight out in front, this could mean that he is confident.

Superbad (beginning scene)
In this opening scene you can see the relationship between a pair of friends Seth and evan. By the language and the topics in which they discuss you can tell that they are close and have and almost typical later teenage relationship. Its quite stereotypical that teenagers like to talk about topics such as masturbation and sex. As the scene continues you can see at the end of it that there is a discussion about there life in the next year and how they have gotten into different schools, this almost makes the scene end on a low as you can tell that the two are worried and saddened about leaving each other and going to different schools but do there best to hold it in.

Opening scene analysis
The opening of this film is very dark and holds a lot of suspense, it shows an unexpected reunion of a farther and son. You can see in the discussion that the son Tommy has a certain discomfort and resent towards his father. As the scene goes on he begins to mention about his mother who passed away and Tommys father having a drinking problem. Tommy also mentions something towards women getting beaten, 'its hard to find a women who can take a punch nowadays' this is referenced towards his dad no longer having a women in his life. This could perhaps show that the relationship between his mum and dad wasn't very good. Towards the end of the opening clip Tommy also finds a picture of his brother and by his reaction and questioning of the picture to his dad it perhaps shows he is jealous or envious of his brother.
